The venue
Skipton Castle, perched on a rocky bluff dominating this North Yorkshire town, is one of the most complete medieval castles in England. Its solid walls and roof are intact and a penetrating sense of medievalism runs through the building from the Renaissance grotto to the dungeons. Mary, Queen of Scots was held here, but the castle's most dramatic period came in the 1640s, when, fighting for the Royalists, it withstood a three-year siege.
For children
The dark nooks and crannies will excite most imaginations. Let them check out the medieval privy - a hole dropping down on to the rushing Eller below. There are also colouring cards and model- making.
or adults
There's a real sense of walking through history. See the 13th- century chapel and the Conduit Court, a charming spot reached through an original Norman arch. Other points of interest include the medieval kitchens.
Refreshments
The Clifford tea rooms offer a good range of snacks. There's a pleasant picnic area behind the chapel.
